Chapter Eleven

Monday morning, Candyce tried to keep herself busy, checking off the list in her notebook on what she needed to do to prepare for the maze. When her mind trailed off toward worry about her mom, she sent up yet another silent prayer asking God to heal Ma, to help her find a way to see her. He had to be tired of her constant pleas by now.

Candyce smiled over how before Finley left her last night at the store, he’d held her hands in his and prayed with her. Actually prayed! She’d never known a man who did that unless he was some pastor or church elder.

During the quiet of the night, alone in her little apartment, she fought hard to squelch those nagging voices telling her she was only bringing more trouble. That Finn had a nice life going. She didn’t deserve someone good like him.

By the time she dragged herself out of bed early before sunrise, her joy had been tempered down to apprehension that she’d lowered her guard too soon. That she’d been too hasty, and he’d end up getting hurt again. He was much too good for someone like her with such a tainted, sordid past.

She’d been so overwhelmed by his generosity that she’d lost her head.

Finally, weary of all the nagging worrisome thoughts, she set herself to praying and working. Busy hands, calm mind, her grandmother used to say. Maybe not calm, but not losing it, at least.

By the time her employees arrived to open the shop, she’d made more cookies than they’d need for the whole week. Well, she’d offer them cheap at the festival. They’d stay good in the freezer until then.

Once they had their morning prep taken care of, she called Bree and Nate back to the kitchen. “I doubt there will be a lot to do. If you two don’t mind watching the shop while I run a couple of errands, when I return, if one of you wants to go on home, that’ll be fine.”

Bree, who’d been a great help setting up the coffee serving area, offered, “Business will pick up Candy, once we have the grand opening. How about I work on making some fliers we can pass out around town.”

Candyce smiled. “That would be great.” She mentioned the coupon idea Finn had for the festival. Bree promised to get right on designing those, too.

Nate said he’d wash the windows and sweep the sidewalk. “I can run down to the printers and put in the order for you, once Bree has them designed.” He paused a moment as he stared out the front windows at the people strolling past. “What would you think about setting up a sample table out front? Maybe we can give samples of cocoa to warm people up? And maybe offer a bowl of your handmade peppermints? For the lunch crowd.”

The weight dragging behind her lightened a little. “You both are gems. Yes, to all of that. I love you guys.” She gave them both a big hug, then donned her scarf and cap over her coat.
